Assignment 1-2

Pop Culture is everything that surrounds us from the programs that we watch on television, to the latest fashions, the foods we eat, and the way we communicate with one another. Pop Culture influences our thoughts, actions, and emotions.

Popular Culture is relevant in the business environment in a sense of how we deal with our customers and how businesses elect to market their products and services.

I have chosen the television show American Idol as my artifact. I would guess that it is the highest rated reality type show on television today. Ryan, randy, Paula, and Simon are household names. I believe this show changed the way the music industry recruits new talent.

Kristy -

Great choice! I love American Idol. I decided at work today to use it but I'll have to think of something else. I'm so glad David Cook won this year and I can't wait to hear more from him.

Kristy,

I have to say that the best part of American Idol is the beginning tryouts. Next to the comedy channel, there is nothing funnier on television. However, after the tryouts are over, I don't watch the show anymore. It amazes me though how much America loves this show! The girls at my office would talk all day long about the different contestants with such passion in their voices. They would know every contestant by name, where they grew up, what kind of family they came from. It was amazing! One girl cried when her contestant was eliminated. Idol even makes the 6:00 news anymore and our morning radio stations give "Idol Reports." It's a shame America doesn't show this passion in a more productive venue. Hope your contestant wins! Great blog!

Personally, I think American Idol has become more of a popularity show than singing talent. The past couple of seasons I have watched some ridiculous people make it to Hollywood and not for their talent but because their auditions were outrageous. For example, Sanjia from last season. Yes he did okay for the tryouts, but stunk and became know for his wacky hair do's and his popularity kept America voting for him. Since then, I have not been that interested in the show.

This is the first year I watched American Idol consistently. I guess they look for the whole package person not just singing talent. I wonder how much the votes are really based on the public voting and how much what Randy, Paula and Simon say will influence the votes.
